Insert versus full-frame

An insert window goes into the existing frame and is faster and cheaper. Full-frame removes down to the rough opening and lets us correct the sill pan, flashing and insulation. If there is any water history at that opening, insert is the wrong call.

What the ratings mean

U-factor measures heat loss and SHGC measures solar heat gain. In Ohio you generally want a low U-factor. Chasing the lowest SHGC available makes sense on west elevations and costs you useful winter gain elsewhere.
