What a full roof system means

A roof is not just shingles. Deck, ice barrier, underlayment, starter course, field shingles, hip and ridge, and balanced intake and exhaust ventilation all have to work together. GAF will only issue its strongest warranties when the qualifying components come from the same system, which is why we do not mix and match to shave a few dollars off a bid.

Ice barrier is not optional in Ohio

Ice barrier membrane is required by the Residential Code of Ohio at eaves and valleys, driven by the design temperature in Table R301.2 and the coverage rules in Section R905. No Ohio municipality opts out of it. If a bid you are comparing does not line-item ice barrier, that is the first question to ask.

Tear-off versus layover

A second layer over existing shingles is cheaper today and more expensive later. It hides deck damage, shortens the life of the new layer by trapping heat, and complicates any future insurance claim. Layer limits also vary by jurisdiction. We quote tear-off by default and will tell you plainly if your roof is a candidate for anything else.

Ventilation

Most premature shingle failure we open up in central Ohio traces back to a roof that could not breathe. Intake at the soffit has to match exhaust at the ridge. Adding ridge vent without opening intake makes the situation worse, not better. We measure net free area rather than guessing.
